Plummeting voter turnout should be of great concern to all Canadians, but unfortunately, it is our apathy that is allowing the Harper government to launch its heavy-handed agenda on Canada with minimal resistance.A Political Junkiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03342345936277964422noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6399730406480392183.post-42574011264053632422011-01-27T03:52:03.595-04:002011-01-27T03:52:03.595-04:00Harper has chosen politics over policy. Twice choo...Harper has chosen politics over policy. Twice choosing prorogation over governance; the rhetoric of law/order;of militarism; of flag waving. He can/will spend billions on jets and ignore a structural deficit.

This strategy,to date, has been successful.During a period of natural and economic disruption around the world, the perception of stable leadership at home ,persists. Harper's core support has few dissenters with very small but measurable growth in rural Ontario and elsewhere.

Recently, Harpers' Conservatives went to New York City and spent millions; returning to assault Canadians with a fear campaign of attack ads. A minority government that pretends to lead by casting a big shadow of fear. More politics ;no policy.

After successive Conservative minorities, people seem to be looking for change but they are appearing intimidated, cynical and less confident. Voter turnout is lagging.

Is it enough, then, to simply say "it's time to forgive the Liberals and re-elect them"? Of course not. We have been there. We have said that. For more than 100 years. It is time for change.

Imagine restricting Canadians to two choices. The Harper Conservatives' "Fear campaign" or the Ignatief Liberals' arrogant and vision-less "natural right to govern" belief. 'Tweedledum' or 'Tweedledee', as people used to say. In order to grow and move forward, the use of Fear and tired Twentieth century rhetoric, should remain back there.

A Federal Election is close. Now is the best time to talk about the real benefits a Canadian Coalition opportunity. New Democrats and many Liberals have already demonstrated their willingness to co-operate. The bold, first step is to talk openly about a coalition opportunity and the real benefits for Canadians. Of course, the best time to start is now -before the entrenchment of a Fear campaign.

Sadly, Conservatism is synonymous with Republicanism. I won't let that happen in Canada. I'll support a Coalition opportunity. The question is will you?Terry J.in Nanaimohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12544836803079450890noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6399730406480392183.post-56373477605420201142011-01-24T17:43:46.206-04:002011-01-24T17:43:46.206-04:00Is Harper starting out the election advertising wi...Is Harper starting out the election advertising will a big mistake? His first ads are personal attacks on Ignatieff about his being more an American than a Canadian. Yawn. The Liberals are responding by attacking the Tories plan to buy 35 F35's without looking at the options.

Here we have a guy as PM for 5(ish) years engaging in personal attacks - with their first ad! Five years in power and all they can talk about is that the other guy lived taught in the States. Even Harper can't think of anything he's done worth talking about.

I think he's out next election. Conservatives have opposed most every thing Canadians hold dear - like universal health care, universal pensions, labour laws that promote a strong middle class, freedom of choice, etc. Time for the Libs to be forgiven their trespasses and return to government.Mylegacyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11532592953744479060noreply@blogger.com
