With Rob Ford making the news on a
daily basis for the past month or so, one issue that is rarely discussed is his
compensation package. This is particularly pertinent because several Toronto City Councillors have assured the media that the city's business goes on with or without Rob Ford. So, with no further delay, from the City of Toronto website, here it is in all of
its glory:
Salary: $175,395
Health Benefits: 100 percent
employer paid
Life Insurance (two times annual
salary): 100 percent employer paid
Dental Insurance: 100 percent
employer paid
Long Term Disability (75 percent of
salary): 100 percent employer paid
OMERS Pension Plan Participation:
Yes
Mileage Rate: $0.54 per
kilometre for the first 5000 kilometres in a year, $0.48 per kilometre
thereafter.
Every four years, at the beginning
of each term of Council, the remuneration level for the Mayor and City Council
are reviewed to ensure that the remuneration for each is at least in the 75th
percentile of the comparator group. As well, the remuneration is
increased annually on January 1st of each year by the increase in Statistics
Canada's Toronto Consumer Price Index, in other words, the Mayor's salary is
fully indexed to inflation, something that most of us don't have.
Severance: According to
Municipal Code Chapter 223 , if the Mayor (or Member of City
Council for that matter) is not re-elected or leaves for reasons of health,
death or retirement etcetera, a severance of 1/12th of the member's annual
remuneration is paid for every year of service to a maximum of 12 years of
service. On top of this, the outgoing Mayor may receive an additional
maximum of $3500 to be spent on outplacement, transition or retirement
counselling. I always find it interesting that not being re-elected is considered a point of eligibility for severance. Apparently, if they win an election, they win and if they lose and election, they still win.
In addition to their own salaries,
the Mayor and each member of Council is allowed to hire the following staff to
an annual total of $220,409.28:
Executive Assistant: $44,007.60 to
$82,628.00
Constituency Assistant: $36,199.80
to $68,468.40
Administrative Assistant Level 2:
$36,199.80 to $68,468.40
Administrative Assistant Level 1:
$27,682.20 to $51,979.20
So, there you go. That's how
well Rob Ford is compensated, thanks to Toronto taxpayers.

How can a politician that's elected for 4 years, but not re-elected, receive a severance of 1/12th of his salary upon being defeated, covering up to 12 years of service. Doesn't that mean Ford could go away and still receive a full salary - for one or multiple years? Yikes - what a good career choice is running for office.
